What Is Pre-Engineered Building?
Continuous industrialization and modernization have led to very many breakthroughs, especially in engineering. These days, there is already something called pre-engineered buildings or PEB in structural engineering. These structures are pre-fabricated with available raw materials in the market and come as a complete structural system. The PEB design is a brainchild of PEB manufacturers and/or designers that goes out to the market as a complete structure and as a replacement for conventional building framework. Out of these new construction breakthroughs, time, effort, and man-power are saved. It is good to note that a building can now be erected using PEBs in less time than a normal building. On top of that, PEBs are significantly lighter than the conventional building by 30 percent.

Inclusions of a pre-engineered building (PEB)

As a complete structural system, a PEB may or may not necessarily come with a wall cladding and roof – although there are a number of manufacturers that include them as part of the entire system. The entire frame generally includes rigid frames of roof beams and columns bolted together. The frame is comes in different intervals like 15’ and 60’. At times, the frame comes column free, which can work on a span of 300’ max. Due to this effective design, the building is lighter and more inexpensive than the conventional framework.
Aside from the major framework, a pre-engineered building also comes with purlins as spanning members of the roof’s secondary structure. The regular spaces between these spanning members are either 4’ or 5’. Below, on the wall are girts, the members that act as secondary structure of the wall system. These secondary structural members are designed to support the wall cladding of the PEB, which is usually a metal panel and may or may not be provided by the manufacturer. Below, a base angle may also be included.
Other inclusions of a pre-engineered building would be the roof bracing, wall bracing, window frame, doorjamb, end wall corner column, door header, overhead doorjamb and eave strut. All of these parts don’t need on-site welding because they are field bolted, making it most suitable to industries that restrict welding activities. PEBs are also easy to relocate wherever it is needed, thus can be resold when no longer needed or simply dispense when totally irrelevant for the industry. Therefore, PEBs are the future of structural engineering in saving time, effort, and money of clients.
